149.5 / 5 Mile Playlist

Posted by: joymanning In: Gym Tunes| Weigh In| Working out

A totally crazy thing has happened in the last two months. I have become a person who can just walk out the front door and run five miles through the city in less time than it takes me to go to the gym and come back. I can’t even tell you how much this amazes [...]

Where Have the Gym Tunes Been?

Posted by: joymanning In: Gym Tunes| Working out

Lately I’ve been working out frequently with Audrey, and we typically gab away through our cardio. And on days I do go alone, I find myself flipping through the channels watching some unconscionably bad show like Candy Girls or the Housewives of Orange County. Today I watched a What Not to Wear type show with [...]

I have a feeling I’m going to love this whole album, but I especially love this one.
Choice lyric:
I saw taillights last night
in a dream about my first wife.
Everybody leaves and I’d expect as much from you.
I saw taillights last night
in a dream about my old life
Everybody leaves and why, why wouldn’t you?

Gym Tune of the Day: Mates of State’s Ha Ha

Posted by: joymanning In: Gym Tunes

I vividly remember the day Anna-Lisa Donovan introduced me to this song in 1998. It was ancient then. I still love it. Thanks, Anna-Lisa!

Gym Tune of the Day: Lily Allen’s F— You

Posted by: joymanning In: Gym Tunes

OK. This tune is awesome for the gym or any time you feel misanthropic. It’s not safe for work. Or kids. Or those who dislike the F word. But if your sensibilities are less delicate, you might like it as much as I do.

Gym Tune of The Day: Mary J Blige’s Work That

Posted by: joymanning In: Gym Tunes

Sing it, MJB. This has been on every one of my workout mixes for over a year.

This is not a terrific version, with all the skate board noise and everything, but it’s the best I could find. I love this song.
Choice lyric:
You can tell me secrets if you want to
but my house ain’t got no ceiling, and my heart won’t hold no lies.
I’m not like everybody that you talk to.
And I [...]

This song is also the overall theme of the week.

  • Felicia D'Ambrosio: Say it, sister. You DON'T need to be a rail to be happy and healthy. Women's magazines reinforce every negative thing we think about ourselves, and
  • JeanineBean: Hooray! I've been waiting for this post! Good for you. Let's talk about something ELSE! (-:
