25 days down/6 days to go

Yesterday was a busy day. In the morning, I filed two pieces that were due, then I made my way to Center City in the driving sideways rain to meet a friend for lunch. At home, I drank a cup tea, organized my thoughts, and then dug into researching markets and sending queries. (I’m participating in a query challenge game organized by a freelance writers group to which I belong.)

Around 5:30 I got up from my desk to start the pizza dough for last night’s dinner and noticed that my lower back really hurt. And the pain kept getting worse until I went to bed. I woke up today in less pain than last night, but my back is still sore and stiff. I don’t know if I should run today as I planned to. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to treat it because I never had back pain before. The most annoying part is, I don’t even know how this happened. Yesterday morning I had no pain at all.

I’m supposed to go out to dinner tonight, provided the pain doesn’t get worse. Does anyone have any tips for making lower back pain go away?

I second the yoga recommendation. If you can get your hands on some Arnica gel, that works wonders for me. Good luck!

Give your body a rest, spend some time lying down with your knees up. Take Advil for swelling.

A hot water bottle or heating pad can also help to relieve back pain.

I’ve had lower back problems for years- I’ve found that heat makes the inflammation worse, ice brings a lot of relief. Try to stretch as much as possible/don’t sit in one position for too long.

Lie on the floor on your back. I wouldn’t take too much time off – keeping your body active, like with walking, CAN help.

You might need to work on strengthening your core, too. It can take care of a lot of back problems. It’ll help you support yourself while running, too…

Heat relieving patches work for me. Bengay or Salonpas are 2 of the brand names. Get them at your drug store. You just stick one on your lower back and take it easy. No running. Good luck…

First off, let me start off by saying you should be using ice, not heat. Take it from someone who has spent a life time with back pain. Secondly, if you need to take some sort of pain medication, take Alleve. Third, and most important, make sure you don’t have a rash where you pain is coming from as it could be a return of the shingles. Hopefully (and probably) not but just make sure. Sometimes the rash doesn’t materialize until a couple of days after the pain starts.

I was going to say yoga, but I see that others beat me to it!

Also, listen to Mary Jo… my chiropractor also says to use ice. Do you have any Robaxicet?
