I spent a chunk of yesterday feeling my way around the new blog I’m working on and learning to use Flickr with some expert help from the awesomely web savvy and talented Marisa of Food in Jars. It took up enough time that I never ended up getting over here!
Oh, and I also spent part of the day roaming the streets because I locked myself out of the house. Luckily, my Dad, who has a spare set of keys, drove over from East Falls to let me back in. After that, we went over to have lunch at Izumi, which was such a treat.
It just so happens that my eating research for work has included a bunch of sushi over the past few days, so it was the first time I’ve been to Izumi and ordered a non-sushi lunch. I opted for the Nabeyaki Udon, which was noodles, tempura shrimp, a fishcake (which has an unexpected texture almost like a hard boiled egg white), a poached egg, and scallions in a dreamy fish stock/seaweed broth of some kind. It was served with a shaker of what was described as Japanese 5 spice. It cost $9, was so huge I couldn’t eat it all, and very, very good. It’s not impossible I will go back and eat it again for lunch today.
My sister (I know many of you mosey over here from her site) is coming to Philly for a visit. She arrives tonight. While I clean the house today, I am going to make her a version of the black beans I developed for Serious Eats this week. (Speaking of which, how do you like that photo? Dan took it with the new camera!)
Jill’s vegetarian, so instead of cooking the beans with meat, I’m going to stir some Sriracha sauce and liquid smoke into the cooking water. Maybe that will give them a similar depth of flavor. I’ll let you know.
