150.5

Posted by: joymanning In: Weigh In

Good news: I am finally emerging from my photo funk of earlier this week. Your comments helped so much. Thank you Missy, JavaChick, Jen, ElJayBee, and Lisa D, for expressing empathy. It made me feel less alone in the experience. And I’m grateful for the smart advice and perspective I got from Jax and Elizabeth. I’m grateful to Vik for reminding me that the camera adds 10 pounds and to Jen who kindly reassured me that I’ve never looked chubby to her. (She’s known me through more than one 130-to-160 pound cycle.)

Supportive blog comments rule.

I know the photos are probably not the most flattering or the most representative I’ve ever taken. And, as Dan pointed  out, I am standing next to the tiniest woman I know.

I’ve also been thinking about how we (or at least I) compare photos of myself to the majority of photos I see: magazine photos, advertising photos, etc. And then today, I read this post on my new hero Kate Harding’s Web site about just how contrived the typical media image is. I especially enjoy the juxtaposition of the magazine photo and the photo she took of herself.

Happy Friday, everyone!

I’m glad you’re emerging from the photo funk! It’s hard, I know. I don’t ever compare myself to magazine photos, because I know how fake they are. What does it for me is photos of me with my much thinner female relatives — including my sister who is a size 4-6 and an aunt who is a size 0-2. I just keep reminding myself that I am who I am and that, while my weight is my personal issue, my sister has epilepsy and cannot have children and my aunt has severe food allergies that make eating a problem. So really, my issues could be far worse.

I didn’t realize you were standing next to the tiniest person you know! The camera definitely adds 10 pounds and standing next to a teeny tiny person adds at least another 20 ;) You’ll note on FB that I never took a b-day photo with any of my girlfriends because they’re all TINY!

I’m glad you’re coming out of the funk, and thanks for the link to that website … I’ll have to check her out – I love her style!

Good! You’ve got your positive attitude back. I, too, found comments from your blog followers helpful. I have done more thinking about yesterday’s blog concerning alcohol’s empty calories. (See http://wwwjanblog-janice.blogspot.com/ ) Other than monitoring and moderation, I haven’t come up with anything that is even remotely brilliant. So I will continue to ponder. Thanks for being so interesting.

The camera shows us that we looked much younger when every picture was taken too. I am always amazed when I look back even 5 years.

Next time we are in each other’s company, please remind me to show you the secrets to taking skinny pictures. While it is not 100% effective (you are who you are) there are a few tips to making yourself look skinnier in pictures. If you look at my FB, the longer I am out, the less I use these techniques, but my first picture of the evening always looks the same :)

I took some tips from Parris Hilton. While not the model persona to emulate, you have to admit the girl takes a good picture.

I am a firm believer in self-appreciation, but I also like to always look my best (whatever that is this week)!
