It really hurts to tally up the calories in a restaurant review meal. Yesterday’s grand total: 2,583. Yikes. Dinner alone? 2,008 calories.

Killer. How do you estimate calories in a restaurant meal? Just estimate how much butter, olive oil, etc is added to a dish?
I hope it doesn’t ruin the joy of the meal to be doing that math…

Eating out sucks sometimes, even if you’re getting paid for it! Statistics show that it is unlikely you will lose weight if you eat out 3 or more times per week. BTW, I ate a slice of veggie pizza, had a small salad, and 2 strawberries…and still managed to lose a little!!

Maggie, Fit Day has most restaurant dishes in it’s database, so from there I estimate the portion size of what I actually ate. I’m a pretty accurate portion size guesser. If the dish isn’t in Fit Day’s database, I substitute the ingredients the dish is built on. It isn’t 100 percent accurate, but I believe I’m closer than I previously thought I could get, back when I was using that as an excuse to avoid keeping a food log.

That’s a lot of calories, but it’s part of the job.
I’m a little concerned about how little you eat (calories-wise) for breakfast and lunch on the days you eat out. How do you feel physically during the early part of the day? Do you feel full? Do you have energy?

Jen–I don’t feel super energetic, but I’m not typically starving. I try to eat things with low calorie density (like yesterday I had a bowl of bulgar wheat for breakfast) so I don’t get too hungry. I usually have a few nuts right before I head out to dinner, too, so I’m not too hungry when I sit down. If I workout on a low-calorie am day, I take it easy. Today I will do a longer, harder cardio workout because I’m stocked up on calories from last night and my good breakfast (bulgar again). It is far from ideal, but it’s the best arrangement I’ve come up with yet.

Love Fit Day! It seems like you are making good food decisions overall, considering your “dilemma”…a job I would actually love to have!!!
