147 / a lunch story

Posted by: joymanning In: Restaurants| Weigh In

I am somewhat surprised that I don’t weigh less–it was so hot yesterday I thought I would have sweat away a few pounds. In the morning, I ran for three miles continuously–more than I typically do–and later, after a lovely lunch at Meme, I walked all the way back from 22th and Spruce in the [...]

147.5 / Potato Leek Soup

Posted by: joymanning In: Cooking| Weigh In

Because of our CSA inventory, I decided to make potato leek soup last night. And maybe it’s the Julie & Julia media blitz, but I decided I would make Julia Child’s version, potage parmentier
… That is until I cracked Mastering the Art of French Cooking and saw that Julia calls for boiling a pound of [...]

OK, Who Brought Dessert?

Posted by: joymanning In: On my mind

Nobody? Oh, is it because Tara and I couldn’t figure out a relevant way to include them in our first book? We’ve talked several times about how this situation will need to be rectified in book No. 2. I want frosting at a time like this.
But even without a nice cake or pie, the ending [...]

Cynthia Furey’s photo of the Shrimp and Slow-Roasted Tomato Risotto at her blog Furey and the Feast looks more like what we made than the official photo in our cookbook. Thank you Cynthia! So validating to see it. And her blog is so (don’t be mad Cynthia!) neurotically familiar (as in: “But my nerves subsided [...]

Alona Martinez of Culinary Compulsion makes our easy Tomato Pancetta Linguine and delivers the tale of its creation in English and Spanish. Looking at that picture this early evening, I sort of wish that’s what I was having for dinner.
Some awesome Almost Meatless recipes testers, Erika & Deacon Chapin to whom we will be [...]

Another vegetarian blogger, Robin Asbell of the blog Robin Cooks Veg, took on one of our meat lite recipes and made it meatless. Here is her version of our Chicken and Curried Cauliflower Sandwich. I actually prefer tofu to chicken so I can’t wait to try it her way myself. Sandwich No. 2 in this [...]

My fellow restaurant critic and friend Adam Erace, author of Blogalicious, made our Chicken and Arugula Pesto Pizza for the party. I’m so glad he could cook with us; I know his meals at home are even more precious and few than mine. I’m thrilled we taught him how to get the most out of [...]

Brigid Kaelin and I met more than a decade ago at NYU. Back then, I admired her gorgeous glossy hair, calm demeanor, and the fact that she could play the saw and the accordion. She was nothing like all the attention whores I knew back then who thought they’d become celebrities. I should have guessed [...]

When I asked Jaden Hair, author of Steamy Kitchen and clearly one of the most popular girls in the online food playground, to come to our pot luck, I didn’t think she’s say yes. I have only “met” her via Twitter, after all, where I enjoy following her endless foodie travels and TV appearances. I [...]

Pot Luck Post No. 2: Coconut Soup, Chili, and Gyros

Posted by: joymanning In: Books| Cooking

Oh, look! Monica Bhide is here at the pot luck! She made our super simple Thai Coconut Curry soup. We’re so honored that Monica could come to the party. Because, frankly, we borrowed this terrific idea from her.
Tara, aka The Diva on a Diet, author of Beach Eats, made what might be my favorite recipe [...]
