I recently ordered 10 articles of clothing online. (1 from the Gap, 1 from Banana Republic, and 8 from Old Navy.) I know that I will never feel any better about the way I look wearing the battery of frayed and faded rags that my wardrobe has become since I started working from home in November of 2007. (Unless I’m meeting a friend or going out to a restaurant, I’m typically wearing slouchy gym pants or stained “cooking” khakis with a sports bar and tank top or T-shirt. Dan calls it my uniform.)
Ordering stuff online, though, is like dragging a bunch of outfits to the dressing room. Inevitably, there will be winners and losers. Of my 10 items, 4 have to go back because they don’t fit or they just look weird. Not coincidentally, they are from Old Navy.
My very favorite item was (also not coincidentally) the most expensive one. This pretty top from Banana Republic. I also really like the Bermuda shorts I ordered from Old Navy–I got both black and white. And, of course, the cardigans (also in black and white) are wardrobe-stretchers. I really needed those.
Having a few outfits that fit and look nice goes a very long way to making me feel presentable to the world.
