In everything I’ve ever written about my formative food years, my parents get slammed. The meal staples of my childhood come up any time I’ve been interviewed: Burger King, Bryer’s ice cream, Mama Celeste, Hamburger Helper, and Pizza Hut supplemented by metric tons of pretzels, potato chips, and Lance cheese and peanut butter sandwich crackers, [...]

I knew I had some serious post-restaurant bloat yesterday when I was working out and my hands swelled from the sodium overload. Perhaps tomorrow I will be in the 142 range–not tremendously more than I weighed last week.
Just for the record, I really did not want to see my weight this morning. I knew I ate a huge volume of restaurant food last night. I knew that 8 glasses of wine in three days was not going to work in my favor. I said to myself, “I’m bloated. If I skip today, [...]

Boxed crackers were one of the last prepacked items I quit buying. Like most people, I considered crackers to be beyond the scope of what a home cook could capably accomplish.

5 workouts at the gym and one long walk for a total of 305 minutes cardio.
Stay tuned [...]

Not surprising for the end of this weekend. I’m even keeled about it.
I definitely splurged last night. Dan and I started at a new place, Lynda’s Mediterranean, where we shared hummus and eggplant with this delicious puffy, yeasty bread, and moved on to Le Virtu to meet friends at the bar. There I had three glasses of Italian white, and I could not resist ordering the insanely [...]

Wild blueberries and walnuts supposedly offer a host of protective health benefits. And it so happens I love both ingredients. I keep frozen blueberries and raw walnuts on hand all the time; blueberries for pancakes and walnuts for snacks.
With no leftovers available for lunch today, I decided to try a walnut/blueberry smoothie. Now, as anyone [...]

Sounds good to me. I’m trying to resist the temptation to starve myself into the 130s just for the hell of it. It’s no good if I can’t maintain it, and if I have to do something I can’t or won’t keep up once I get there, the weight will come right back on anyway. [...]
