I Miss Oprah

Posted by: joymanning In: On my mind

Even when I had a regular full time job, I rarely missed an Oprah show through the miracle of DVR. Oprah is like a parent to me. I started watching her religiously when her show debuted in September of 1986. My family had just moved from Mayfair, a vibrant urban community in Northeast Philly, where [...]

That’s all well and good. Yesterday I got a tremendous amount of actual freelance-writer-y work done, in spite of no one being around, and met with a friend to catch up over a couple (really just two) drinks. Then, I ate (at last) my healthy lentil soup.
Truly, my game plan is to enjoy the remaining [...]

That’s a surprise.
Yesterday’s light-and-healthy plan crumbled after I received my advance copy of Almost Meatless. Seeing the book in its final form is overwhelming. I can barely wrap my mind around it. When I first came up with the book’s concept, it seemed improbable that I would ever actually be holding a printed-by-a-real-publisher, about-to-go-on-sale-at-Borders copy [...]

Fat and Happy?

Posted by: joymanning In: On my mind

This interesting survey from today’s Telegraph reports that women who are a UK size 14 (a US size 12) are happier with their looks and lives than any other size. In second place? The size 10s (US). In other words, women my size are happier with themselves than those who are in the tiny sizes. [...]

Joy’s Lentil Soup

Posted by: joymanning In: Cooking

Many years ago, my sister dated a chef. Their relationship, strangely, had more of an impact on me that it did either of them. He was the first person who ever showed me how to cook anything. He taught me to blanch vegetables, make mornay sauce, and, most importantly, make soup.
At the time, I ate [...]

Not bad, considering the butter-soaked meal–plus dessert–I had last night. Today promises to be a slimming kind of day. No restaurant food, no booze, and spinning at 6:15 pm.

Women and Men

Posted by: joymanning In: On my mind

This morning, I heckled my husband until he got on the scale. I also calculated both of our BMIs. Dan hates me writing about him, so I’m not going to spill the beans about what he weighs today, but I will say that he is usually with me when I’m on reviewing meals and that [...]

Dan really did hide the cookies, and they remain hidden. He’ll take them to his office tomorrow, where than can provide excess sugar and fat to his colleagues.
I was relieved to see the holiday gain seems to have leveled off. Tonight I’m off to a reviewing meal, but not until after I’ve made a big [...]

154 or Dan, Can You Hide the Cookies?

Posted by: joymanning In: Weigh In

Well, that was not what I was expecting this morning. I truly believed the holiday creep-up was over. Yesterday’s Xmas lunch leftovers were moderate; it’s true I stopped for oysters and just one beer on the way home from Jersey, but I went to the gym right after; and for dinner I had just a [...]

This is–I hope–the post-holiday high. We have just one more Christmas to go–lunch today–and when I get back, I’m going straight to the gym.
